There are too many to cite, but the words of one former administrator remain in mind. When speaking with students or parents, it's important to ask whether they are complaining or filing a complaint. The former requires empathy and a willingness to listen; the latter might require action and follow through. As a parent, I've often thought of that distinction as I tried to navigate when to intervene and when to support my own teenagers.
I'll confess: I enter every bookstore I pass. I can't help it. It's the same reason I check out more books from the library than I could ever possibly read. I think one of the great joys in life is stumbling into learning something new. For me it's books, but I'm agnostic on the platform for others. Finding ways to continue learning is invaluable.
I'd like to work with the team to find a way to bring the power of mentorship to any student, regardless of their economic resources. I believe CC has a unique opportunity to leverage its network of passionate mentors and the lowering of cost of technology to reach more students in more places. How we get from here to there should be a remarkable journey.
