Catastrophe. Climate Crisis. Migrant Caravans. Are these terms galvanizing or destructive? Why did a Financial Times reporter title a piece on climate migration “The Human Tsunami”? Does crisis rhetoric stoke fear and nativism? Inspire activism? Cause people to think the problems are too big to solve? Focusing on climate change and migration we will interrogate the merits of apocalyptic narratives in journalism and explore how journalists implicitly take a stance on these pressing topics and how that rhetoric is perceived.
Females make up 50% of the college-educated workforce, but only 28% of the science and engineering workforce. Why? What does that look and feel like on a personal level for women in STEM in 2021? Join us to hear the perspectives of four dynamic college women in STEM who will share insight from their own journey - what challenges they’ve faced, when they’ve felt alone, what diversity within this field really looks like, and how they’ve overcome and defied against all odds to be leaders within their own respective fields.
