Seba M. (IN A NUTSHELL)
Seba is studying Mechanical Engineering with a thermodynamics and fluids concentration at Stanford University. In 2010, Seba moved from Chile to Portland, Oregon, where graduated high school with highest honors. Since sophomore year of high school, Seba has been convinced that the climate and energy crises are as fascinating as they are the biggest existential threat to human and ecological existence.
In his resulting pursuit of acquaintance and collaboration with the energy world, Seba has worked with three different labs across the country, most recently the Majumdar lab at Stanford. He has mostly focused on decarbonizing the production of hydrogen with applications in energy storage and direct air carbon capture, but has also founded projects to de-electrify vaccine supply chain refrigeration (funded by the Gates foundation) and to implement innovation- and creativity-based STEM curriculum in Chile (backed by the department of education). Most recently, he has been working for six months at a startup developing low cost, low emissions hydrogen production, in a device called an electrolyzer. He will continue to work with them part-time as he finishes his bachelor’s degree.
Seba enjoys bouldering, playing soccer, and playing chess. He also writes and listens to poetry when he is feeling overwhelmed. Seba will focus on all kinds of chemistry, physics, and math projects, but will (of course) always have a special place in his heart for energy-related projects.
