PRO TIP:

When evaluating whether a mentor would be a good match for your student keep in mind that the greatest leading indicator of success is how well a mentor and their mentee get along.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Would the student find this person inspiring?
  • Do they share any interests, hobbies, or lived experiences?

Jack R. (IN A NUTSHELL)

Jack Riley is a recent graduate of Brown University, where he completed degrees in Computer Science and Music. He now works as a music producer full-time and continues to mentor students in computer science and music. Jack has mentored 9 students individually during his 2 years at Curious Cardinals, and taught twice at Reach Academy's collaborative summer program. He has enjoyed teaching Python coding, machine learning, math, music theory, and music production so far, and loves diving into anything tech or music related! At Brown, he was a co-president and co-founder of the Brown Organization of Producers and Songwriters (BOPS), as well as technical director and executive board member for Tunes for Change, a Brown organization that hosts charitable benefit concerts. In 2021, he was a recipient of the Brown Department of Music Margery MacColl Award for outstanding musicianship, and in 2022 the Ron Nelson Prize as well. He also played bass/drums in a folk-rock band that toured over 60 shows throughout college! In school, Jack worked as a teaching assistant in large introductory computer science courses. Jack is an accredited music producer who, at 19, had songs featured on Spotify’s “New Music Friday,” “Anti Pop,” and “Fresh Finds” editorial playlists. Now having released over 90 songs with over 20 artists that total over 5 million streams, his work ranges from indie pop to rap to folk rock. Jack's top priority is always shaping students' curiosities. He believes that no tool or knowledge can rival a student's excitement about a topic, and building that energy is the best way to learn.
